About Sides & Space
Sides & Space publishes practical, sourced guides for actors, playwrights, directors and the small companies and collectives they form. It is a publication only: it does not rent rooms, sell memberships, run auditions or represent anyone.
What we cover
- Reads and auditions: cold reads, self-taped auditions, new-play reading series, development residencies and taking a show to a festival.
- Rooms and community: how to find and judge rehearsal space, how desk-exchange and work-trade arrangements work, what online communities for performers can and cannot offer.
- Running a collective: what cooperatives and shared artist workspaces are, how they are governed, and how unincorporated projects raise money through fiscal sponsorship.
How guides are written
Guides are written for this site. Rules that come from somewhere (union agreements, labour law, tax guidance, cooperative principles) are linked to the organisation that publishes them, and the guide tells you when a rule varies by country, state or contract. We do not publish figures we cannot source, invented testimonials or reviews of businesses we have not checked. Nothing here is legal, tax or union advice; when the stakes are real, ask your union, an accountant or a lawyer.
Guides are reviewed and updated when the underlying rules change. A union rate that has moved on or a festival deadline that has changed can be reported through the contact page; the company behind Sides & Space is named in the legal notice.
About this domain
From about 2015 to 2022 this domain belonged to The Artist Co-op, a membership workspace and rehearsal venue for artists in Manhattan that later moved its community online. Sides & Space is a new, independent publication: it has no connection with that organisation, its founders, staff or members, does not offer its memberships or programmes, and reuses none of its texts or images. Some older addresses on this domain now lead to the guide closest to their former subject.
